1st Place – Alexsis Self (Wylie)

It was another exciting year for Searching for a Star…Year 5 proved to be a banner year for Wylie Performers!Wylie ISD students made it a clean sweep in this year’s “Searching for a Star” contest.  With each student’s win comes one for Wylie ISD via the Wylie ISD Education Foundation (WEF) as well.  A total of $1,150 was awarded to the contest winner’s campus fine arts programs.  First place winner Clay Mobley won $750 for McMillan Junior High.  Second place winner, Alexis Self raked in $250 for Wylie East High School and third place winner Yaminah Lewis won $150 for Harrison Intermediate.  The annual event, sponsored by the Ballard School for the Performing Arts, serves as a showcase for young talent from across the Metroplex. 
 Singers compete in three categories: elementary (ages 8 through 10), middle (11 – 14), and senior (15 – 21). Three contestants in each group advance to finals and the chance to become the overall winner.

In the senior class the finals produced stellar performances by the two top singers, D’Moreya Woods and Sarah Olson. At the end of the night out of a possible 34 points they were within .45 of a point of each other! Sarah scored her highest points singing Celine Dion’s version of “At Last” while D’Moreya scored highest on the founder’s choice song “I’m Yours” byJason Mraz. After the votes were tallied the over-all winner was D’Moreya Woods!

First up was the 2008 SFAS winner, Taylor Beckham whose song “Like as Star” brought a hush over the large crowd. After singing Taylor and her parents took the stage where they were presented flowers and given accolades for the promotion of SFAS during the 2008 year.  Taylor carried the torch well last season and through Tree Sound Studios and RMG Records in Atlanta she became the 2008 poster girl at the National Convention for the Girl Scouts of America.

Meagan McLaughlin (Wylie)Jonathan Pilgrim was the  winner of our first competition. He has tremendous talent and a beautiful voice !  He is a versatile singer; with the ability to sing all styles of music including pop, country, R&B as well as Opera!  He is also a songwriter! Below are some of Jonathan’s accomplishments after Searching for a Star:

. Baylor University Music Major
. Vocal Instructor – Midway High School …SW Waco TX.
. Lead Role in “Marriage of Figaro”  opera buffa (comic opera) composed in 1786 in four acts by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, with Italian libretto by Lorenzo Da Ponte
 Jonathan will be Judging in this year’s SFAS Competition!
